Scammer Alert: George

Many interested buyers all along the garden route have seen this amazing deal for a PS4 with 25 games and 4 Controllers for just R4,000.




How We Know it's a Scam

  1. The photos on the ad are blurred, indicating fake pictures.

  2. The seller could not send us more photos of the package - indicating she doesn't actually have the console.

  3. Seller was marketing in George, but not located in George.

  4. Wants web wallet payments - easy way to take your money and run.

We decided to get in contact with the seller as an interested buyer to ensure our predictions were accurate.


The seller was quick to respond to our messages, stating that she is not actually in George, but Beaufort West instead. She was quick to offer a courier service, but didn't want to meet and do the deal face to face.


This is already a red flag as the seller markets in a different location and did not give us the option to collect.


Furthermore, she asked for a web wallet payment, which is hard to trace and the most common payment method for scammers.


When we confronted her about being a scammer, she suddenly stopped responding. If it was not a scam, the seller would be willing me make arrangements and prove that it's not fake by meeting our request of additional photos and willing to meet.


How to Avoid Scammers


Since we're in the used gaming console business, we've dealt with all types of scammers and their tricks. Here are our tips to avoid getting scammed:


  1. Do not fall for deals that are too good to be true.

  2. Inspect the advert, fake or copied photos always appear blurred on Facebook Marketplace.

  3. Do not agree to any deposits or online payments without seeing the items.

  4. If the seller only offers courier, there's a reason they don't want to meet.

  5. Do not agree to e wallet payments as these cannot easily be tracked.

  6. View the seller's Facebook profile and ensure it's not a fake account.

  7. See the seller's Marketplace Ratings. If there are no ratings and things seem fishy, avoid the ad and report it.
