Is Your PlayStation Sounding Like a Jet?

Having a PS3 or PS4 with loud fan noise could be damaging your console. Is it time to send it in for a service?

We deal with second had PS3 and PS4 consoles on a daily basis, some working perfectly and some not being able to play a game for more than 10 minutes before it overheats and shuts off.

When a console gets to the point where it won't stay on anymore, you'll need to send it in for a service as soon as possible. This is the system telling you it cannot keep cool enough due to dust or possible damage.

Consoles such as the PS4 sucks in aim from the sides. Those vents get blocked up, which stops the console from getting cool air as seen in the photo to the left.

Dust build up like this would already cause the console to run louder than usual as it cannot get enough air, especially with high-performance games.

Most would be able to see this bust build up without opening the console. You'll see some particles sticking through the vents on the left and right of the console. If yours has any build up, send it in for a service before it gets worse.

Ignoring the Loud Fan Noise

Even if your PS3 or PS4 isn't making too much fan noise, but is a bit louder than usual, we highly recommend having it cleaned.

The dust build up in the side vents eventually make their way into the console, especially since the fan speeds up more to get enough air.

This causes the dust to settle on the motherboard and other components of the console, which further restricts airflow and could cause serious damage.

In the photo to the right, we can see moisture build up in the top left-hand corner. The console didn't get wet, but because there's so much dust, a rainy day could cause moisture to get stuck in the dust. Enough moisture would short out components and damage the board.

Console Turns Off During Play

When the console turns off in the middle of your game, do not turn it on again. This is a build in safety system that stops the console from damage the CPU due to overheating. If you continue to turn it on and play, the heat builds up more and would eventually cause permanent damage.

Once dust moves part the vents, it build up on the heatsink that's meant to keep the console cool by removing the heat coming from the APU (GPU and CPU).

At this point it's only a matter of time before the console begins to turn off during gameplay and causing damage.

The fan working to keep the heatsink cool would also be covered in dust, not allowing it to move air through the heatsink.

This would cause the entire console to run much hotter than usual, including RAM clips and many other components such as the power supply.

The power supply also carries a lot of heat while the console is on. Therefore, the fan blows through the heatsink and out the vents at the back, which goes through the power supply to keep it cooler as well.

Not servicing the console would cause damage to those components.
